Ocular ConditionsAre your eyes itchy, dry, irritated, swollen, red and scratchy, or do they sometimes feel like they are full of sand or on fire?  You may have an ocular condition commonly known as dry eyes.  Dry eyes are often the result of not blinking often enough, dry weather, side effects to medications, and aging.  However, severe dry eyes can also be the cause of more serious ocular conditions such as vascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome or structural issues with the eyelids. Ocular conditions often begin by being small and uncomfortable, but if left untreated, could lead to more serious problems or damage to your retina or cornea.

The best relief for simple dry eyes is artificial tear drops found in gels and ointments that are applied directly into the eye through a dropper.  If you find yourself in dry conditions for extended periods of time, the application of a few artificial tear drops will have your eyes thanking you.  Remember to drink plenty of water to keep your mucous membranes moistened.  If the air in your home is often dry, try a humidifier to moisten the air and give relief to your eyes.  Apply a warm washcloth to your eyes and give your eyelids some relief.  Also, give your eyes a break, especially if you are looking at a computer screen frequently or reading small print.  If irritation and swelling accompany your dry eyes, give us a call at Friedman Eye Care to discuss and evaluate your eye health.  We can recommend the best relief for your dry eyes.
