Eye TestMost of us have had at least one eye test in our lives to make sure we have optimal eye health. And, if you are like many people, you have to see your eye doctor once a year or so to make sure your eyes are doing well and update your prescription. There are several parts to an eye test that we all have to go through, but what are all those tests for, anyway?

Here are some simple explanations for some of the parts of a routine eye test:

  • Eye Muscle Movement – Checking for normal alignment, the doctor will have you follow a light or their fingers.
  • Cover Test – To determine how well the eyes work together, you usually cover one eye and then the other eye to determine if one eye turns away from a target location.
  • External Condition and Pupil Test – The doctor will check the outside of the eye for any irregularities and test the pupils for their response to light and dark stimuli.
  • Visual Acuity – This is when you read an eye chart, covering each eye individually and reading increasingly smaller lines of letters, until you can’t read them anymore.
  • Retinoscopy – Using light directed away from the eye while you stare at a fixed object, the doctor determines an approximate lens prescription.
  • Refraction Testing – For an exact lens prescription, you may look through a variety of lenses and say which lens helps you see better. “Number 1, or Number 2?”
  • Slit Lamp Test – This test helps the doctor check for any eye diseases, even though you may not have symptoms.
  • Retina Exam – The doctor checks the back of your eyes, including the retina, veins in the eyes, blood vessels and the optic nerve.
  • Glaucoma Test – Using a puff of air or a small instrument that touches the front of your eye (after numbing drops), the doctor checks the pressure inside your eye for signs of glaucoma.
  • Visual Field Test – The doctor will test the area you can see in front of you without moving your eyes. This helps to ensure you have good peripheral vision.

Although this seems like a long list, it is comprehensive and ensures that you are in good eye health from year to year.
